ISO 14001:2026: what certification bodies have to plan for

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026. Of the management system transitions, this one has the nearest declaration deadline: your readiness declaration to your accreditation body is due by 31 January 2027.

Last reviewed 26 September 2026. We update this page as accreditation bodies publish their own arrangements.

The dates that bind you

Global ACI set the transition requirements in document TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30. Every date runs from the end of April 2026, the month the standard was published.

Accreditation bodies ready

The latest date by which accreditation bodies must be ready to assess certification bodies against ISO 14001:2026.

31 January 2027

Your declaration is due

Each certification body declares its readiness to its accreditation body, with evidence: a transition plan and updated documentation covering competence, audit duration changes and control of the certificate. In Italy, Accredia circular DC 14/2026 sets 30 January 2027. In India, NABCB's transition policy of 5 September 2026 is earlier: the self-declaration and plan were due by 30 September 2026, and NABCB completes CB transitions by 30 April 2027.

No new 2015 certificates

New and initial certifications may only be issued to ISO 14001:2026.

End of transition

Every certified organisation must have transitioned. Accredited ISO 14001:2015 certificates are no longer valid after this date.

What the rules settle, and what they leave to you

Settled

  • Where the transition audit sits. At a scheduled surveillance audit, at recertification, or as a separate special audit. It can be done remotely under IAF MD 4 if you can show the audit objectives were met.
  • What it has to cover. At minimum, the changed requirements of ISO 14001:2026, changes to the client's context, and any other changes the client's management system needs.
  • What happens to clients who do not transition. You may keep auditing them against the 2015 version, but you must tell them their certification expires at the end of the transition period.

Left to you

  • Additional audit time. You must consider whether extra time is needed and justify the figure under ISO/IEC 17021-1 and IAF MD 5, which Global ACI now references as TECH-3-004.
  • What counts as competence on the 2026 revision. The rules name sales staff, auditors, technical reviewers, certification decision makers and contract and application reviewers as relevant personnel. Your own competence procedure sets what evidence is enough for each.

The practical window is about eight quarters

The end date covers the whole transition, and nonconformity closure, technical review and the certification decision all come after the audit. Allow roughly three months, and the practical last transition audit falls around the end of January 2029.

Starting in Q1 2027, that is about eight quarters of delivery. A body with 150 ISO 14001 certificates needs about 19 transition audits a quarter. Start in Q1 2028 and the same certificates have to fit into four quarters, about 38 a quarter.

Running it alongside ISO 9001:2026

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 and its transition ends on 30 September 2029. The two programmes overlap almost completely and draw on the same auditors and reviewers, but ISO 14001 closes five months earlier.

That matters most for clients certified to both. If you transition both standards at one integrated visit, that visit has to happen inside the ISO 14001 window. In practice the earlier deadline pulls part of your ISO 9001 programme forward.

Model both transitions together

Our transition load planner now takes both certificate counts and shows the peak quarterly load against your own capacity. The ISO 9001 side is covered in what ISO 9001:2026 requires of certification bodies.

What changed in the standard, in audit terms

Your checklists, auditor briefings and report templates need to reflect these changes before the first transition audit:

  • Climate change in context. Climate-related risks and opportunities are now part of the context of the organisation.
  • Risks and opportunities. Clearer requirements, with explicit consideration of emergency situations with environmental impacts.
  • Life cycle perspective. Environmental aspects are considered across the life cycle, from sourcing to end of life.
  • Planning of changes. A new requirement on how changes to the organisation are planned so they do not undermine the environmental management system.
  • Externally provided processes. A wider focus on externally provided processes, products and services in operational control.
  • Management review. More structured inputs and outputs, with emphasis on environmental performance.

What to have ready by 31 January 2027

  1. 1

A transition plan. Scope, sequence, and how you will reach every certified client before the end date.

  2. 2

Updated documentation. Procedures, audit checklists, report templates and the certificate template for the 2026 version.

  3. 3

Competence evidence for everyone in scope. Training records and sign-off for auditors, technical reviewers, decision makers, application reviewers and sales staff.

  4. 4

Your position on audit time. Whether transition audits carry extra time, and the written justification.

  5. 5

Certificate control. How 2015 and 2026 certificates are distinguished, and how you record and communicate expiry for clients who do not transition.

Written by the Certyze team for accredited certification bodies. Where a date or requirement is set by Global ACI or your accreditation body, their documents govern. This page is a planning summary.

Certyze runs the certification lifecycle for accredited bodies: auditor and reviewer competence, IAF MD 5 man-day calculation and certificate control in one place. Those are the three things your declaration has to evidence.
